Discover the market town of Helmsley

20th October 2021

Helmsley is the only market town in the North York Moors National Park and it’s in a perfect position as a base for exploring both the town and the National Park that surrounds it. The famous walking and cycling routes, the Cleveland Way and the Ebor Way, both start in Helmsley. As well as challenging routes there are also easy circular routes to explore a little closer to Helmsley as well! We’ve put together a list of our five favourite things to do in and around Helmsley to make the most of your visit.

Our top picks in and around Helmsley:

  • Helmsley Castle: this English Heritage site can be glimpsed as you meander around the market square but we’d highly recommend getting up close and discovering the 900 years of stories told in the exhibitions in the visitor centre before taking a walk across the moat and up the castle itself! If you’d like to discover more English Heritage sites, from the Castle you can pick up a map to guide you on the scenic walk over to Rievaulx Abbey.
  • The market is held in Helmsley every Friday and is said to date back to the 13th Century. Take in the atmosphere and also visit the independent boutiques, bakeries and delis around the town, perhaps pick up some tasty treats for supper!
  • Take a tour of the Helmsley Brewing Company, situated on Bridge Street in the town. Learn about the techniques used by this independent brewery, available every Wednesday.
  • Have lunch at Mannions on Castlegate, with glimpses of the castle from every window! With daily specials and an enviable wine and champagne selection it’s an ideal spot to plan the afternoon’s adventures.
  • In the warmer months visit the outdoor swimming pool, situated on Baxton’s Sprunt on the edge of the town. It’s a welcome retreat on a hot summer’s day! There are also family fun sessions for children too.

Places to stay in Helmsley:

The Pheasant and The Partridge at The Old Bank are two self-contained apartments within the same building, which can be booked separately or together to accommodate larger groups. Located in the centre of the market town with views over the square they are ideally situated for exploring both the town and further afield across the North York Moors National Park.
