THE LOCAL AREA

One of the most famous walks in the UK, Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast walk finishes in Robin Hood’s Bay and the village also lies on the Cleveland Way footpath as well as many local circular walks, the village lends itself as the perfect village bolthole for a walking holiday exploring some of the best walks in the country.

Robin Hood’s Bay is just 5 miles from Whitby and is a much-loved gravity-defying picture-postcard village. Once home to the smuggling trade on the Yorkshire coast, said to involve fisherman, clergy and gentry alike, today the village has adopted a much more sedate pace of life.

There are also several pubs in the village with great pub grub. If you want to dine in, take advantage of the well-stocked local stores there, including a fishmongers selling  locally caught fish. There are independent shops and cafes dotted around the village and not forgetting the dinosaur museum!

As hard as it will be to steal yourself away from Robin Hood’s Bay, you really ought to explore the rest of the coast. The Yorkshire coastline is a mix of rugged cliff tops, with RSPB Bempton Cliffs just 30 miles along the coast, visit in May/June to see the Puffins. With so many peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages, long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside attractions of yesteryear, this is proper bucket ‘n spade territory.
