As the name suggests, Sandsend lies at the end of almost 3 miles of sandy beach, west along the bay from Whitby, it is a popular summer destination, with its fine sands, rockpools, beach cafes and fabulous coastal views.
As the name suggests, Sandsend lies at the end of almost 3 miles of sandy beach, west along the bay from Whitby, it is a popular summer destination, with its fine sands, rockpools, beach cafes and fabulous coastal views.
The village clusters around twin becks that have carved parallel routes to the sea, where the East Beck flows across the beach to the sea is a favourite, sheltered spot for families with young children to play with toy boats and build sandcastles. The Cleveland Way passes through attracting walkers and others to come here year-round to explore the woodland and historic and industrial remains along the line of the old coastal railway, which once ran from Whitby to Middlesbrough.
If all you want to do is just sit and look out to sea, this is a great spot, with a surprising number of good places to eat and drink too, watch the surfers ride the waves when the surf is up!
