A pretty, quintessential English country village on the edge of the North York Moors, a perfect resting place for exploring the moors on foot or bike. With fantastic independent cafes, award winning butcher’s shop and our favourite ice cream seller, it’s a perfect spot for food lovers and adventurers alike!
North Yorkshire
Great Ayton
With the River Leven running through the village and Roseberry Topping as it’s backdrop it makes for a pretty stopping point on a walk or cycle route. With a beautiful green next to the river where you can enjoy a picnic in the summer or nip into the Velveteen Rabbit Luncheon Club cafe, overlooking the river and green, for a warming cup of hot chocolate if it’s a little chilly!
From there you can wander up into the village centre along the river towards the James Cook birthplace museum where the young explorer, Captain James Cook received his early education and see how the village might have looked in the eighteenth century when Great Ayton was his family home. Keep going along past the museum and you’ll reach the award winning Petch’s butchers, we can never resist one of their award winning pies!
Then if you’re ready for a sweet treat you could walk back towards the green and stop off at Suggitt’s ices for a 99 before continuing your walk or heading back to your cosy cottage for a glass of something by the fire!
