At the heart of Wensleydale lies the gateway town of Leyburn, known as “A Town for all Seasons”, it offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, pleasantly situated on a low ridge above the River Ure. There are superb walks from the town, none lovelier than the stroll up to the summit of Leyburn Shawl, a long low ridge covered with pine woods, which gives extensive views along the Dale to Pen Hill and beyond. Keen walkers can continue to Preston-under-Scar, Redmire and Castle Bolton. Leyburn is an ideal base for walking, sightseeing, or just watching the world go by.
There’s a good choice of local shops, restaurants, cafés, and even a cinema, there are also banks, a post office, two supermarkets, as well as several takeaways and a convenience store open until late. The celebrated Friday market offers a range of stalls and make sure to look out for the monthly Farmer’s Market for delicious local produce.
