Mousehole is a little bit of magic tucked away in the village of Oldstead, a sleepy corner of the North York Moors, surrounded by rolling hills, sheep grazing in the lush green fields, the music of sweet birdsong and the stillness of peace, it is a Beautiful Escape like no other. Set in one of the world’s Dark Skies Reserves, this very special place to be, has been lovingly restored by owners Gemma and Simon of the famous ‘Mouseman’, Robert Thompson of Kilburn, master craftsmen, makers of exquisite oak furniture, Simon has lovingly created special pieces for the cottage, spot the little mouse in the detail, guests can also visit the workshop in the nearby village of Kilburn and see the master craftsmen at work.

The cottage is all set on the ground floor, with ramp access to one door from the gravelled driveway, it has a warm, easy feel, the striking glass gable with Crittall style doors open up to let the outside in on warmer days, the open plan living space is designed for relaxation with comfy seating and a log burner for chilly days, two bedrooms and a smart bathroom. Outside is a pretty seating are with table and chairs, it is such a beautiful setting it will be hard to steal yourself away, but there is so much to see in and do you really should try to explore this very special part of North Yorkshire.

Living Space

Designed with great care and attention to detail, the stylish and cosy living space has a soothing colour palette of earthy tones echoing the natural landscape all around, the double height glass gable is a striking feature and connects the inside to the outside beautifully, comfy seating and a log burner to keep you toasty on chilly days and when you want to have a film night there’s 32 inch HDTV with Amazon Prime and Netflix. Mouseman pieces created by Simon for the cottage are beautiful and interesting, discover more little oak mice hidden in the carpentry when you stay, all adding to the uniqueness of this very special place to be.

 

Kitchen

Open to the living space the kitchen is a joyful space, the island has seating for dining which connects to the living space making it easy to chat and cook together, all of the the practicalities are taken care of too, including, an oven, hob, dishwasher and plenty of crockery and cooking utensils for cooking up your holiday favourites.

Terrace & Grounds

The most spectacular countryside surrounds the cottage, this is the perfect place to be, kick back, relax and breathe in the wonderful fresh Yorkshire air, the pretty table and chairs are all set for al fresco dining so you can enjoy the views over hearty breakfasts and tasty suppers.

Exploring

Oldstead is a pretty little village tucked away in a corner of the North York Moors National Park, surrounded by spectacular scenery this sleepy hamlet offers peace and tranquillity, the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The village is an ideal base to enjoy wonderful walks in all directions, cycling and other outdoor activities offer so many opportunities to connect with nature. Perhaps more famously it is home to Tommy Banks Michelin starred restaurant, The Black Swan, it is a special treat, booking essential.

Just over a mile from Oldstead, lies Kilburn, famous for its White Horse, a figure carved into the limestone hillside in 1857 which can bee seen for miles. The village is home to the renowned cabinet makers, Robert Thompson’s, known affectionately as the ‘Mouseman’, a little mouse is carved into each piece visitors can tour the workshop and see the master craftsmen in action,.

There are many historical attractions nearby including the majestic Castle Howard, the ecclesiastical ruins of Byland Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and a castle in the attractive market town of Helmsley. Directly form the cottage you can explore an abundance of walks and trails, the Howardian Hills and also the neighbouring North York Moors National Park both offer excellent walking routes for seasoned ramblers and those looking for a more sedate meander alike. It’s also a perfect place for a cycling holiday with miles upon miles of perfect climbs and descents awaiting your discovery with jaw-dropping views to make the climbs worth the burn!

Being just 20 miles north of the City of York you are also perfectly placed to head into the City to experience the culture of the Minster, museums, galleries and the ancient City walls or if your passion is food you’ll find many excellent independent bars and restaurants to discover!

York is a city brimming with history and culture. Take a walk along the castle walls and marvel at the view below, or head to York Minster for some truly jaw dropping architecture and follow that with a wander around the cobbled streets with beautiful architecture to admire and independent boutiques to peruse.

The North York Moors still holds villages relatively untouched by time, Goathland where sheep roam freely and Grosmont with its steam railway, venture a little further to the spectacular coast and discover wild and wonderful seascapes, world beating fish and chips, expansive sandy beaches and Whitby home to Bram Stoker’s Dracula!

Mousehole was just perfect, down to every last detail from arriving at the property it felt like being in a fairy tale, the quietness was wonderful, the quality of the renovation was outstanding. There are lots of local walks and so many fine dining options, the welcome goodies were perfect and a lovely touch from owners, Simon and Gemma who were so hospitable, we will be back!
