Middleham is a pretty little town in the heart of Wensleydale with a lovely Georgian market square at its centre. It claims to be the smallest town in Yorkshire, but it is a giant in the world of horse racing with its many professional stables earning it the nickname ‘The Newmarket of the North’.

The Grade II listed Carriage House is one of Middleham’s hidden gems, just off the market square sitting alongside the owner’s home, the majestic Middleham Grange. The Carriage House is truly a beautiful cottage, family friendly with a lovely, private enclosed garden.

Enter through the tall iron gates and across the cobbles and you are greeted with this beautiful old stone turreted Carriage House. Following a full renovation overseen by the owner, Helen, the cottage boasts stunning interiors with wonderful gardens and a glimpse of Middleham Castle all adding to the charm and elegance of this country retreat.

Helen has taken great care to retain the character of the cottage without compromising on any of the conveniences of modern living.

Kitchen

Step into the kitchen and you immediately get that wow factor feeling and a hint of what is still to come as you continue your journey into this haven of luxury. The fabulous handmade kitchen is a bright open-plan space painted in exquisite Farrow & Ball colours and has quality Silestone worktops. There is an induction hob for easy and safe use, an inbuilt microwave and eye-level oven. Integrated dishwasher and washer-dryer can also be found hidden behind the kitchen cupboards. With a generous dining table this is the perfect spot to sit and chat over a leisurely breakfast and with everything you need for cooking up a tasty supper in this beautiful space, it’s just perfect.

Sitting Room

The sitting room is spacious and well laid out with large comfy sofas and an inglenook with wood burner, perfect for snuggling up with a good book and a glass of wine or enjoy a movie night on the large smart TV. On warmer days throw open the French doors and sit on the terrace of the large and private walled garden and enjoy the pleasure of the surroundings. With large table and chairs and a BBQ, al-fresco dining under the stars may be in order on the balmy evenings.

Bedrooms

Working your way upstairs to the spacious landing and the two en suite bedrooms, feel the luxury of the super soft carpet under your toes. The Middleham Suite is located at the front of The Carriage House with views over the rooftops of Middleham and down to the Market Square where in the mornings you can see the racehorses passing by on their way to the Gallops. Beautiful soft furnishings and sumptuous bed linens adorn the super-king zip link bed which can also be set up as two singles. There’s a handy TV for late night movies or catching up on the morning news. The en-suite has the finest of fittings including a bath, shower over, WC and is finished in polished marble. Fluffy towels, robes and luxury hand soap is all provided.

The Garden Suite is equally impressive with stunning views out over the gardens to the castle. This spacious king-sized room is elegantly proportioned with a spacious en-suite boasting a walk-in marble shower. Once again, the attention to detail in the decor and furnishings is exquisite making it a wonderful place to relax after a day out exploring the Dales.

THE LOCAL AREA

Middleham is set in beautiful countryside where Coverdale and Wensleydale meet. Famous for its twelfth century castle, Middleham Castle has the largest castle keep in the North of England and best known for being the childhood home of Richard III. You’ll also see stunning views of Wensleydale from the viewing platform in the castle

Middleham has a strong history with horse racing for over 200 years, you’ll often see beautiful racehorses crossing the market square on their way to the gallops where you can see them power across the countryside, an exhilarating sight! There are many famous racing yards based in and around Middleham and if you fancy having a look behind the scenes head there at Easter when eleven yards come together for their annual open day. A must for any racing or equestrian enthusiast.

The property is superb, with 2 lovely bedrooms both en suite. The lounge is very comfortable and the kitchen/dining area well equipped with everything you would need. It is in a great location, tucked away just off the Market Square, with 3 pubs, a fish and chip shop and a restaurant, non of which were more than 5 minutes walk away.

It is ideally situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales with many attractions only a few miles away. We visited the Wensleydale Creamery and then a brewery tour at the Black Sheep Brewery and then ventured further afield on the following day to Whitby.

The booking process was straightforward with the deposit taken on booking and the follow-up balance payment and damage deposit taken when they said they would be.

I would not hesitate to return.

The Carriage House is amazing, the quality of the furnishings and decoration is excellent. Both bedrooms and bathrooms are very well appointed with plenty of sotrage space. The kitchen had everything we needed and the garden is exceptional, we had great weather and spent late afternoons/early evenings on the very comfortable garend furniture with a glass of wine – absolutely perfect.

The area was perfect for us as walkers, we were able to park up our car and not move it until the end of our stay. There is a great choice of walks from the door, we covered 40 miles in 3 days! There are many fabulous pub in the area, Three Horsehoes in Wensley, BLue Lion East Witton, good stops for lunch.

The booking process was very straightforward and we will defnitely book with you again.

The Carriage House was a truly beautiful place to stay. Everything was clean and immaculate. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed. The bedrooms were beautifully decorated and the bed was extremely comfortable. Outside the garden was a lovely place to enjoy, really peaceful and relaxing.

What a fabulous cottage! It was very comfortable and had everything we could have wished for. The cottage was spotless and both the bathrooms were luxurious. Having a log fire and wood provided was a welcome added luxury. The garden was fabulous and would be great in Spring/Summer as there was complete privacy. This was probably the best cottage we’ve ever stayed in.

We were able to park our car up when we arrived on the Monday and not move it again until we left on the Friday. There were so many great walks from the door of the cottage which also incorporated some very welcoming pubs for our lunch stops.

Booking was very straightforward and I would definitely book with you again. If all your cottages are to the same standard of The Carriage House we’ll be very happy to keep using you.

We loved the Carriage House in Middleham it is very comfortable and beautifully decorated and the kitchen is very well equipped for cooking. The village is so pretty with a few pubs and tea shop, the village of Leyburn is a short drive and has everything you need. We thought the area was perfect – scenic with lovely villages and bigger towns such as Richmond on the doorstep, the area is fabulous for walking. We went to Harrogate one day and did a walking / tasting tour which was fun. We would definitely return as we had a wonderful time and loved the property.

We had a wonderful stay at the Carriage House in Middleham. The cottage is one of the most comfortable cottages we have stayed in. Everything is designed for comfort and convenience, making guests feel very welcome and relaxed. Beautifully decorated and designed it makes for a wonderful stay. The garden is amazing, a real sun trap for evening apéritif’s. We loved listening to the crows (or are they rooks?) and the church bells.

Middleham is a lovely village, the local shop is well stocked for essentials and there are plenty of places to eat and drink. It is a really convenient location from which to explore the Dales and beyond and of course seeing the horses come by each day and being able to walk to the Gallops is the icing on the cake. A truly excellent introduction to the beauty and hospitality of Yorkshire.

Easy, professional booking service, very informative directions and advice. This is the first time we have booked with Beautiful Escapes but if this is a typical standard then we would certainly want to book with you again. (Shame you only cover Yorkshire!)

We had a really enjoyable week at the Carriage House in Middleham last week. The house was lovely and the garden was beautiful, although the weather was quite chilly for June and we were glad we had taken warm clothes! The house was well equipped, and everything we needed was provided – we were glad of the easy parking too, as this is something we find can be quite stressful on holiday.

There was plenty to see in the immediate area: Middleham itself was interesting with the castle ruins to visit, and we saw the racehorses going up to the gallops every day. There were places to eat of all kinds in the village, and a useful convenience store within two minutes of the property. It was a short drive to Jervaulx Abbey, which was well worth a visit, and we loved Bolton Castle which was less than half an hour away and was a fascinating mix of ruins and furnished rooms.

Booking with Beautiful Escapes was very easy, and if we visit the area again we would certainly look at the properties you offer first.

Fabulous week! Walks around Fountains Abbey well worth a visit. Hawes, Richmond & Masham all pretty little towns to visit too. Beautiful 5 mile walks all around the area. A walk up to the Gallops to see the horses training is a real treat and not to be missed!
