Broughton Hall, Estate, and Sanctuary History

12th September 2024

The Broughton Sanctuary nestled in the stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Dales sprawls over 3,000 acres of natural beauty and has been home to the Tempest family for 32 generations. The sanctuary’s current custodian, Roger Tempest, is the latest Tempest in the recorded family line which dates back as far as the 11th century. It is believed that the Tempest family came from Normandy and were given the land as a result of William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066. The estate was established in 1097 in Skipton and has transformed over time into the serene sanctuary that exists today. Experience-based holidays are a speciality here, the rich history of the land and buildings shines through and makes for a truly unique getaway destination.

Broughton Hall Estate’s transformation into Broughton Sanctuary is a consequence of learning from its past and a current, ongoing commitment to co-exist with the Earth. In the face of the looming climate crisis which has already had a devastating effect on both nature and mankind, the Nature Recovery Project aims to create harmony between humanity and nature now and for future generations. To achieve their goal of increasing biodiversity and health and wellbeing opportunities, around a third of the land, which was formerly high-intensity sheep pasture, is being used to create a variety of habitats which will work in unison while serving different purposes, ranging from food production to simply being returned to their natural state. The Broughton Sanctuary Nature Recovery Programme entails tree planting, natural regeneration, woodland management, and the creation and restoration of wetlands. The project also contributes to the UK government’s nature protection goals and aids in the growth of the White Rose Forest and the grander Northern Forest.

A host of refreshing, nature-based activities are on offer in addition to the plentiful events and scheduled classes. Guests can enjoy anything from a tranquil hiking trail to a sumptuous woodland dining experience in the Garden of Cosmic Origin. The sanctuary offers a host of work-related retreats and one-of-a-kind 1-4 week ‘workcation’ packages. Broughton Sanctuary, in more ways than one, offers a wonderful opportunity to deepen your connection with nature while refreshing your mind, body, and spirit. Avalon, the UK’s leading Retreat Centre, provides bespoke services to enhance your stay and allow you to look after your own wellbeing in an idyllic setting. Avalon Wellbeing classes and the Avalon Pool Suite are available to book during your stay, they are also available for private hire offering exclusive use for you and your guests.
